Yamaha YZF-R1

The Yamaha YZF-R1 bike, launched in 1998, revolutionized the sport bike landscape by successfully combining the awesome power available previously in the true liter class (1,000cc) with the lightweight and responsiveness that a 600-class chassis affords.Over the years, despite maintaining its distinctive sharp look, the R1 has undergone technical up gradations to keep pace with the times. The 2006 edition features a short-stroke 998cc DOHC, 20-valve, liquid-cooled inline four-cylinder engine that produces a peak power of 175 bhp.The dual-valve fuel injection system uses motor-driven secondary throttle valves and 32-bit ECU for responsive, instantaneous power delivery. The refurbished Delta box V frame, revised forks and a 20mm longer swingarm facilitate superb handling in the R1. In 2006, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Yamaha racing in America, Yamaha released a Limited Edition yellow/white/black YZF-R1 in original Yamaha racing colours.

Moller M400 Skycar

Price tag: ?

The point of having vast coffers o’ cash, as any filthy-rich person will tell you, is to pay your way out of the mundane hassles that afflict the hoi polloi: traffic jams, military service, child rearing, flossing. Regrettably, aeronautics expert Paul Moller can’t help with flossing, but traffic jams he’s got covered.

Since 1962, Moller, a professor at the University of California, Davis, has been experimenting with fixed-wing planes that can take off and land vertically--the perfect profile for the fabled flying car. The latest incarnation, the M400 Skycar, can carry four passengers as fast as 375 mph while cruising along at 13,200 feet. As the Moller site says: “No traffic, no red lights, no speeding tickets.” Also, one hopes, no midair collisions, no terrifying plummets to a fiery death.

The site calls the M400 “personally affordable,” but it doesn’t quote a price. We all know what that means: If you have to ask, you can't afford it. But you don't have to ask, do you?

Saleen-S7-Twin-Turbo

Designed by engineers, the S7’s engine and drivetrain incorporate the latest in modern racing technology. The new all-aluminum V8 engine casting was engineered and tooled by Saleen to displace seven liters. Redline is 6500 rpm. Space age materials and engineering are used throughout, including stainless steel valves, titanium retainers, beryllium exhaust valve seats, an aluminum throttle body, Saleendesigned aluminum CNC-machined cylinder heads and stainless steel exhaust system. An exclusive Saleen-designed Front Engine Accessory Drive (FEAD) system results in an extremely compact engine, allowing for better packaging and overall weight distribution. The V8 incorporates a unique Saleen-designed side-mounted water pump, a belt-driven camshaft drive and a Saleen-engineered dry sump oil delivery system. The engine’s mid-chassis placement optimizes weight distribution and center of gravity, making room for an unusually tall engine that allows for a very efficient induction system. Air enters a roof intake, passes through a 90-mm mass air meter and feeds into a carbon fiber plenum. From the plenum the air is routed to the twin ball bearing turbos, is pressurized to 5.5 psi max and then passes through an oval-bore throttle body into an aluminum intake manifold with eight individual runners.

The 19th-century American social arbiter, Ward McAllister, the man who originated the concept of defining elite groups by the numeral 400, once said, “A man with a million dollars can be as happy nowadays as though he were rich.”
These days, however, for those looking to dabble in the world of ultra-expensive cars, a million doesn’t go as far as it used to. In fact, if one bought the awesomely fast, incredibly sexy Saleen S7 Twin Turbo in Europe for $670,000, the change from that million would just about pay for gas and insurance.

The amaging flying dutch car

If you hate being stuck in traffic jams, don’t worry, because the new flying car PAL-V is on it way. This Dutch project is a hybrid 3-wheel vehicle that can fly as a gyrocopter and also be driven as a regular car, or to be more precise, like a motorcycle.
When riding on the road, the PAL-V will use the patented technology Dynamic Vehicle Control (DVC™), originally designed for the Carver One, that should make tilting in corners a piece of cake. The flying apparatus is based on the original idea for the “autogiro”, developed in 1923 by Juan de la Cierva, and will have the capability to land practically anywhere. Combining the best of both worlds, the PAL-V ONE will use a foldable rotor fixed on the roof, a foldable propeller, and a slidable tail. The motor used for driving is the same that will power the propeller. The same controls are used in both flying and driving mode, but with different functionalities between them.
The PAL-V will fly only under 4,000 feet and will use a highly fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engine that can run on petrol, but also on biodiesel or bio-ethanol. The vehicle will reach up to 200 km/h both on land an in the air.Flying and riding with the PAL-V will be a breeze, and I can’t wait to get my hands on one of those.
Check out the PAL-V site for more information and images. You can read the press release here.

Bonus: “sQuba” Diving Car

Rinspeed’s sQuba Diving Car is the “first real diving car designed to autonomously turn into an amphibious vehicle at the push of a button — can submerge up to 10m (33ft) under water.” Powering the concept is an electric motor mated to the rear wheels.

The propulsion on the water is ensured by two propellers in the stern and two powerful jet drives in the bow to propel the vehicle under water. The body is constructed from light weight components made of Carbon Nano Tubes and contains an on-board air-filling system. Neither price nor production dates are known.

Lamborghini Miura Concept

Lamborghini Miura Concept
A Lamborghini Miura concept car was presented at the Museum of Television & Radio on January 5, 2006 alongside the Los Angeles Auto Show, though it was not present at the show itself. Instead, the Miura officially debuted at the North American International Auto Show two weeks later. It was the first design by new Lamborghini chief, Walter de'Silva, and commemorates the 1966 introduction of the original Miura in Geneva.

Lamborghini president and CEO Stephan Winkelmann has denied the concept will return the Miura to production, saying “The Miura was a celebration of our history, but Lamborghini is about the future. Retro design is not what we are here for. So we won’t do the Miura.”[7]

Lambo’s Alar: Hot or Not?

Lamborghini fans could face some indecision over whether or not the company’s latest offering honors their tradition of good-looking cars. The Italian sports car maker is famous for producing vehicles that define beauty and pace. While the latter quality is sure to be found in the company’s latest offering, the Alar, the initial reaction to press pictures of the car has been heavily divided between guarded praise and outright criticism.

Mulled for sale from March 2008, the Alar features a reworked version of the V12 mill used in the mighty Diablo. The unit has been bored to 7700cc, and produces 770hp at 7500rpm. Thanks to an ultra-light, super-stiff carbon fiber chassis, weight tops out at a low 1200kg. The 0-100km/h sprint is dispatched in a neck-snapping 3.6 seconds, and the fighting bull will nudge a top speed of 410km/h. It is clear, then, that performance will not be an issue of contention. The design, however, is the subject of much controversy. Penned by Joan Ferci (who also created a couple of Diablo spin-offs that include the Coatl and the Eros GT-1), it has been criticized for its radical styling cues.

While we have not seen detailed pictures of the car, one might concede that it is indeed an acquired taste. Decide whether or not this new Italian brute takes your fancy!
